Boost Oral Health with Gum Disease Treatment
At Torbram Dental, we want to keep your smile intact. That’s where periodontal therapy to fight gum disease comes in. How does fighting gum disease help you keep your teeth? You might not know this, but gum disease – not dental decay – is the number one cause of tooth loss. By developing a comprehensive treatment plan that includes regular general and preventive dentistry visits combined with periodontal therapy for gum disease when needed, we can hopefully help you have a healthy – and whole – smile throughout your entire life.
By some estimates, gum disease affects as much as 80% of the population. It is almost impossible to fight gum disease with home care alone, as some areas of your mouth are almost impossible to reach with even brushing and flossing. Dental hygiene visits are your first line of defense against gum disease.
Once gum disease becomes a problem, though, what can be done? We perform periodontal therapy at our Brampton dental office to stop this possibly serious problem before it has a chance to permanently damage your smile.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
The first step in treating gum disease is detecting it. The best way to detect gum disease is to visit our office – this problem often doesn’t manifest symptoms until it becomes more serious. Contact our office for an appointment if any of these symptoms pop up:
- Your gums bleed when you brush.
- Your gums appear swollen, red, or tender.
- You have a chronic bad taste in your mouth.
- You notice a loosening or shifting of your teeth.
- You develop sores on your soft tissues.
- You see pus between teeth and along the gum line.
Many people ignore bleeding gums. You wouldn’t ignore any other body part if it began to bleed, so don’t overlook this potential sign of gum disease!
What is Periodontal Therapy?
Dentists usually refer to gum disease as periodontal disease. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis. If gingivitis isn’t treated, it can progress into periodontitis, a much more serious form of gum disease that begins to break down gum and bone and threatens your overall health. Gum disease can contribute to systemic health problems such as heart disease and diabetes, so it’s important to treat the problem as soon as possible. Periodontal therapy involves scaling and root planing to remove gum disease-causing toxins and irritants. Essentially, periodontal therapy is deep cleaning below the gum line that allows your soft tissues to heal.
Dr. Vince Fava uses a soft-tissue laser to perform periodontal therapy at our Brampton, Ontario dental office. Dental lasers are great for working with soft tissues because the heat seals the wound, stopping bleeding and promoting faster healing.
