How Do You Take Care of Dentures?

Dentures are the most traditional solution for missing teeth. Although they might not be your real teeth, dentures still require proper care to keep them clean, stain-free, and in their very best shape. Plus, the better you take care of them, the longer you can enjoy your new smile! Are you unsure what proper denture care looks like? Continue reading for a few tips!

Clean Your Dentures Daily

If you fail to clean your dentures every day, plaque can accumulate on them just like natural teeth. They also may not look as white and bright as they did when you first got them. To keep your dentures in top shape, clean them with a denture brush and soak them in a cleanser solution every day.

Here’s a step-by-step on how to properly clean them:

  • Remove and rinse your dentures thoroughly in warm water to remove any plaque, food particles, and other debris.
  • Brush them at least once a day with a denture cleanser, mild dish soap, or liquid hand soap. Avoid using conventional toothpaste as it can cause damage.
  • Use a denture brush to clean all surfaces of your denture gently. Be careful and try not to bend any attachments!
  • Before slipping the dentures back in your mouth, brush your gums, tongue, and natural teeth with fluoride toothpaste.

Handle Dentures Carefully

When handling your dentures, always hold them over a soft towel or a sink full of water. That way, you can avoid damage if you accidentally drop them. Dentures are very delicate and can easily break if dropped, so be very careful! Also, let them soak in cool water or a denture cleaning solution to keep them from drying out when you’re not wearing them.

Remove and Rinse Your Dentures After Eating

You should always remove and rinse your dentures after eating! Running hot water over them helps remove any food debris or other loose particles that could still be lingering.

Here’s how to remove your dentures:

  • First, rinse your mouth with warm water or mouthwash.
  • Fill the sink with water or place a folded towel in it to avoid breaking the dentures if they are dropped.
  • Remove your top denture by placing your thumb against your front teeth, then press upward and outward toward your nose.
  • Remove your lower denture by slowly pulling on it while applying a rocking motion.

Store Your Dentures Properly

If your dentures dry out or are placed in hot water, they can become warped. As mentioned earlier, you should always keep your dentures in room temperature water or a denture solution. Make sure you place them somewhere far out of reach of children and pets!

By taking proper care of your dentures, you can help them last anywhere from five to seven years before needing to replace them. Don’t forget to visit your dentist twice a year so they can check the condition and fit of your dentures!
