Root Canal Therapy: Helping Preserve Your Natural Teeth with Advanced Dental Technology

May 11, 2014

Shutterstock Mouth PainWhen a tooth is affected by decay and the nerve-filled pulp within becomes infected, root canal treatment may be prescribed in order to avoid the need for extraction. At Torbram Dental in Brampton, Ontario, Dr. Vince Fava and Dr. Summer Al Maqdassy specialize in a variety of restorative dental procedures to help keep your natural teeth as healthy as possible, including root canal therapy.

How Do I Know if I Need Root Canal Treatment?

Although only a consultation with our doctors will definitively determine which restorative dentistry treatment is right for you, there are some signs that you may notice that indicate the need for treatment. These include the following:

  • Pain and/or swelling in the gum tissue surrounding a specific tooth
  • A toothache that does not subside
  • Increased sensitivity to hot or cold
  • A tooth that becomes discolored, usually a dark gray

It is important to remember that not all teeth in need of root canal therapy exhibit symptoms. An exam with x-rays will help in your diagnosis.

If a root canal treatment is necessary, our doctors will prepare the area around the affected tooth and ensure that you are completely comfortable before beginning. The infected pulp of the tooth will be removed and the entire cavity will be cleaned of any residual bacteria. This cavity will then be filled with a biocompatible material and the entire tooth will be capped with a customized dental crown. Because we use CEREC one-day crown technology, you won’t have to wait for weeks wearing a temporary before your restoration is complete.
